| Since the eighteen hundreds the shore breakfast has been a tradition in the 1000 Islands for fishermen and islanders. Making camp on the shore after an early morning on the river fishing, the catch was cooked over an open fire, along with eggs, sausage, bacon and beans. All washed down with gallons of camp coffee and the sharing of tales, and news of the islands.
This old tradition has been revived on McDonald Island during the Festival of the Islands for the past 14 years. After a short but scenic boat ride out to the island, enjoy an open air breakfast cooked over open fires. Start the day with fresh fish, bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, baked beans, toast and of course camp coffee made the old traditional way. It's a great meeting place for old friends and making new ones.
The Festival thanks Parks Canada for the use of the island for this unique event and they will have interpretive staff on hand to help you with any questions and tell you a little of the history of the park islands.
Shore Breakfast 2006
Last year's Shore Breakfast served nearly 2000 people. Early each morning 40 dedicated volunteers prepped, cooked and served the guests. Five private boats shuttled the hungry breakfastgoers back and forth to the island, giving a short but scenic view of the beautiful 1000 Islands. |
